Another week of travel has brought us ever westward, plopping us in Poland for a few days. The border crossing from Ukraine to Poland was understandably annoying and four hours were required before we could continue our journey. The border guards paid rather minimal attention to us once it...
Chernobyl Round 2

I had not anticipated returning to eastern Europe so soon, but it seems that the area has a hold on me. The trip over here was mostly uneventful, though United insisted upon canceling our flight to Chicago, thereby requiring us to change all connections. Fortunately, it was worked out that we could still make it to Kiev with only a 10-hour layover in Frankfurt, placing us in Ukraine at the convenient hour of 1:30 a.m. The dark alleyway leading to our hostel was particularly inviting at this hour, but I had stayed there last May, so I was not terribly worried about the less-than-appealing facade. Will, on the other hand, was quite skeptical...
Hello Europe

It has been a long while since my last update – for this, I apologize. I really have no excuse for the delay, but suffice it to say that my life was uninteresting and uneventful so none of you missed anything at all. I read a good number of books, I cooked myself some real meals, I...
Nostalgia

One year ago today, I had just moved out of my home in Boulder in order to leave the country again, landing in Rome on March 4th of last year. It is hard for me to believe that it has already been a year since I set out on my last (quite extensive) adventure. During this time, I visited 16 countries (some for the second time) along with a number of autonomous provinces and restricted zones. Things here are boring in comparison; I wake up every day and know exactly what the following hours will hold – I speak the language of almost everyone I meet and can understand every sign that I see. There’s no mystery in my life now. I...
Politics – The...

Until now, I have avoided entering the realm of political debate. I find that arguments often work themselves into perfect little circles and the outcome is pretty much what you would expect. The obvious hypocrisy of our good friend, Newton and the hilarity of the race for GOP candidacy has not stirred me simply because the entire situation has been laughable. Idiocy is tolerable in small doses, but it appears the fools have stooped to a new low - albeit a low that amuses me a great deal.
Buried in Translation

For those of you who actually read this blog – I am sorry that I have not been diligent as of late with my updates. The frenetic holiday season has transitioned unhaltingly into the post-holiday season. Though work seems to have calmed a bit during these past two weeks, I have found myself with almost more obligations than I care to admit. Several pro-bono translation jobs have had me working between six and eight hours per day outside of work so my life has taken on a very singular existence. Morning to night, I buried myself in translation, trying to get as much finished as humanly possible. Practically speaking, I would be able to work...

It seems that Denver is to play host for the foreseeable future, having replaced the mountains as my new home base. Living in the city is, unquestionably, far removed (both in distance and mentality) from those mountains that raised me. For those individuals who deem it necessary to point...
The End of Travel?
posted by Alex
For those of you who know me well, my transition to the real world is likely to be met with some (well deserved) skepticism. My seemingly endless travels have deposited me back in Colorado where I have found some semblance of what most people call real life. That being said, this blog will...

We have finally departed from quaint and efficient Karlsruhe after having spent the better part of six weeks in the town (not including weekend trips). All of you, undoubtedly, will be pleased to know that we actually did study quite a bit and were not simply gallivanting around Europe....

“Mir wölle bleiwe wat mir sin” Is Luxembourgish for “We want to remain what we are.” This delightful little phrase is, in fact, the national motto of Luxembourg, alluding to the many failed attempts of many larger nations to take control of the little state. Also, for...

“We are Christian,” boomed Francis, a slightly rotund Frenchman, “we drink the blood of God!” I met him in Batumi, Georgia, and it was time to pay Francis, and Roger (the quiet counterpart to Francis) a visit. Francis and Roger live in Alsace, France, just 100 miles...

Another week has passed and we still find ourselves in Germany. Classes are progressing smoothly and we can finally make ourselves understood in German (though nobody really understands when we say that we are learning German simply for fun). This is apparently not an efficient use of our...

Well, here we are – Karlsruhe, Germany. Will and I find ourselves right on the French – German border where we are to stay for the next six-ish weeks. (Hurrah). This is not quite like my past adventures as recorded in this blog, but is instead a study adventure! I will have to...

And so I’m off once again. Two weeks back home provided sufficient respite before the wilds of Europe called me to action. This time, my trip will not be a solo venture – Will shall join me for this portion of my wandering, even though we will be studying German in one place; no 7,000...

And so I find myself in Zagreb, Croatia – the final stop on my tour. I must admit that, after 12 weeks and 13 countries, it is a bit of a bittersweet end. Bitter because there is so much more that I would like to see; sweet because it is always great to go home after such a trip....

I’m sorry this is a bit late in coming – the past week or so has been a whirlwind of trains and buses, all a part of the seemingly endless journey to my current location: Bucharest. It’s good to be out of the Russian-speaking portion of Eastern Europe once again even though I...
Just a Bit of Radiation
posted by Alex
Well, my curiosity got the best of me and I had to go see Chernobyl. Yes, the very same Chernobyl that, 25 years ago, had a terrible nuclear disaster. Before anyone gets worried about how much radiation I actually absorbed, let me say that it was about as much as I will get when I fly from Zagreb to Denver in a few weeks time. Another way to look at it – I would have to spend around 40 days in the exclusion zone (the 30km around the plant) to receive the same amount of radiation as one x-ray. So, to put it lightly, I’m not really all that worried about it. Yes, it could be bad if were to decide to camp out there, but I really...
